Sheena C. Howard: A Visionary in Literature, Film, and Social Justice

In the realm of literature, film, and academia, Sheena C. Howard stands as a true trailblazer. With a diverse and impactful body of work, she has not only broken barriers but reshaped the way we think about representation, race, and culture.

In 2014, Sheena made history by becoming the first Black woman to win an Eisner Award for her groundbreaking book, “Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation” (2013). The Eisner Awards, often referred to as the ‘Oscars of Comics,’ recognized the importance of her work in exploring the intricate relationship between race and comics.

But Sheena’s contributions go beyond this historic win. She is the author of several critically acclaimed books and comic books, each delving into complex themes with a keen eye for cultural nuance. In 2017, she unveiled “The Encyclopedia of Black Comics,” a pioneering work that profiles over 100 Black individuals in the comics industry. It was rightfully named the 2018 American Library Association’s Outstanding Reference Source.

Diversity and representation are at the heart of her work. She co-wrote the comic book “Superb,” featuring a teenage superhero with Down Syndrome, showcasing her commitment to inclusive storytelling.

Sheena’s influence extends far beyond the written page. She has appeared as an expert on popular culture, politics, and social justice on prestigious platforms such as NPR, ABC, BBC, and PBS. Her expertise earned her a 2018 Emmy-nominated episode of “State of the Arts,” airing on NJTV and WHYY.

In 2016, Sheena demonstrated her filmmaking prowess by directing, producing, and writing the documentary “Remixing Colorblind.” This powerful film explores how the educational system shapes our perceptions of race, taking viewers on a thought-provoking journey. Her dedication to these critical conversations led her to organize and host talks about race and education, where event proceeds benefitted local non-profit organizations.

Sheena’s commitment to social justice and creative projects has earned her not one but two Proclamations from the City of Philadelphia. Her roots in Southwest Philadelphia have informed her work, driving her passion for inclusivity and representation.

Today, Sheena is a respected professor at Rider University, where she imparts her knowledge and passion to the next generation. Beyond her full-time role, she dedicates her time to writing and speaking at organizations and educational institutions on topics ranging from social justice to diversity and representation.
